Palanivel Throws Succession Ball Back To Samy
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel has thrown the ball back to party chief Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu on when the long-serving MIC president will vacate the post.
"Many questions and pressures have been exerted on the transition of power in MIC. I have been working closely together with Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu for many years now," he wrote on his blog on Wednesday.
"He has been preparing me for the top post for many years. In fact, during several campaign meetings he declared that I have experience, maturity and the capability to take over from him and lead the party," said Palanivel who retained his post at the recent MIC elections.
Since the polls, there has been no let up over how long Samy Vellu intends to stay after being returned unopposed for an 11th term.
It heightened further over the weekend with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak saying that he would discuss a successsion plan with Samy Vellu.
The outspoken MIC leader, who has been at the helm of MIC since 1981, said he was prepared to hand over the leadership of the party if Palanivel was ready.
"I'm certain he must have a good plan in his mind, especially after having supported me as the deputy presidential candidate for the second time in the Sept 12 elections. He will know when will be the best moment to hand over the reins," Palanivel said.
A former journalist who became Samy Vellu's press secretary before entering politics, Palanivel praised the MIC leader as "an iconic leader in Malaysian history" who had led the Indian community through some trying times.
"A lesser man would have perished long ago," he said.
Palanivel was confident that members would continue to support him after the crucial party elections in which an overwhelming majority of candidates backed by Samy Vellu won.
"The new leadership is made up of many new faces and the delegates have voted smartly by bringing in change where they saw fit. It is a good mix of experience and young blood," he added.

Dear Sir
Samy Vellu have extended his stay in MIC. After the last political tsunami, the President simply refuses to vacate his position. So much so, UMNO, Dr M and most importantly the mass of the Indians have voiced their condemnation of this man. In the political aspect, he is a liability for the BN.
He is living in self denial world and made a fool of himself many times with his defensive remarks over his critics.
To add insult..the present top leaders in MIC are all his endorsed candidates..or aptly put Yes men.
The latest news (Malaysian Insider) - The Makkal Sakthi party have invited Najib to officiate their party, and he has agreed.
I dont know wht is Najib's agenda but its is clear he is courting a party with relevant Indians support.
Is this the end for MIC?
The problem here is clear, even if samy vellu leaves...the party is still tainted with his yes men and those associated with scandals!
Do you honestly think MIC can win back the hearts and minds of the Indians?
My suggestion for the party is to flush out the President, his son, family and associates in order to rejuvenate the party.
For a political party like MIC to survive, its the voting power of the Indians that truly matters.
The only way to do this, close ranks and welcome those fearless Indians like Uthayakumar and Waythamoorthy, Manikavasagam etc.
I have attended MIC conventions before and none of the leaders impressed me with their messages.
I heard Uthayakumar spoke on youtube and also the speeches he made - it gave me a sense of solidarity and pride. He simply spoke the TRUTH on the harsh reality the Indians are facing in this country.
Maybe this is what MIC leaders are lacking? To speak the truth to their political master (read UMNO) in BN.
I agree with Uthayakumar when he calls MIC as mandores for UMNO.
My dear sir, not since the term "Uncle Tom" ( Uncle Tom is a pejorative term for a black person who is perceived by others as behaving in a subservient manner to white authority figures, or as seeking ingratiation with them by way of unnecessary accommodation)
used by African American to criticise fellow African Americans who are subservient to the Whites,
have I came across such a term. And that too a fitting one for MIC.
Are you a mandore? I hope not.
Thanking you for your space and time.
Kind Regards
Asha Iyengar
Dato,
My opinion MIC need a new leader to RESET party direction and struggle for the Indian community. I'm dont meant to undermine current president but new leadership is needed especially after 30 years of Dato Seri Samy Vellu leadership. MIC has become more irrelevant after mishandling of HINDRAF issue and thereafter lost heavily on GE08 and Bukit Selambau by election.
I would like to state Prime Minister's quote here : "If BN doesnt change the people will change BN"
DSSV should quit now.. thts all.. party is for the people... so fulfill people's wish...
ppl like u should advice ur president abt grouses in grassroots... no point of being a vp and not undertaking the grouses to ur president... Pls ask ur boss to quit.. or take a risk of MAKKAL SAKTHI PARTY become an alternative for BN and PM... u all can run party for urself...
Why is Samy Vellu still not willing to let go of his president's post in MIC? Any normal and wise leader will by now would have stepped aside graciously and spent time with his loved ones and grandchildren. It is apparent after observing Samy's actions and flip-flop activities within the MIC that he is suffering from some kind of a phobia.........
Maybe fear of being like South Korean president..?? MAYBE
Dato,
from Malaysian Insider.......
PM finds new Indian allies, bypasses the MIC
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is signalling that he is not going to solely depend on Barisan Nasional (BN) stalwart parties like the MIC and MCA to reach out to the non-Malay communities.
He will launch the new Indian-based party formed by former leaders of Hindraf at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park in Serdang next month in a strategy which bears similarities to his father Tun Razak Hussein's move in the 1970s to welcome more political parties into the establishment fold.
His presence indicates that in the changed political landscape after March 8, 2008 which saw BN allies like the MIC, MCA, Gerakan and PPP fall like tenpins, Umno is finding and creating new allies.
With MIC's and even the PPP's failure to reform and reinvent under Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Datuk M. Kayveas, Umno may well be searching for new partners. The Makkal Sakti party could well play such a role.
Dato, Isn't that a strong signal from the Head of Barisan Nasional himself on the irrelevancy of MIC to the Indian community?
Well....... Got any thing to say Dato??
Dear sir, here are some facts that i would like to share with dear friends. Malaysian Indian Congress(MIC) belongs to the indian community. It does not belongs an individual. Remember, if MIC becomes irrelevent, then one person must take responsibility. The party has got 50 over years history. Our parents and grand parents gone through thousands of challanges to set up these oldest political party in Malaysia (eventhough some say its UMNO).Now,MIC is almost becoming irrelevent. We cannot allow this to happen. One must remember that if we loose MIC , then we will loose indians identity in these country i.e the same way we lost our civalization in Kedah( Kadaram)& Perak(Gangga Negara)& Melaka(parameswara).
Sir, the increase in Indian equity ownership from 1.1% to 3.0% has been regularly highlighted and debated in each MIC General Assembly for the past 10 years. Unfortunately we dont see any changes.I can continue listing...but will it help... Good Luck for Malaysian Indians.
Food for thought :We vote for our leaders to serve us , not other wise (The politician driving Merz and the poor man riding bicyle). I will continue writing...Thanks for the oppurtunity.
Greetings Dato',
interesting facts may be derived from the statement issued by the Deputy. He has clearly indicated that he is ready and thinks that sufficient training or experience has been acquired by him. as a card carrying member of MIC i am of the considered opinion that he is entitled to lead the party as it is high time that we had a new leader in the party. this is not to say that DSSV is bad etc. it is just that everyone needs to retire or be changed and his time has come to hand over the baton. he cannot claim to have unfinished business. no one finishes the race completing everything. some things are best left to his successors.
the problem lies not only in DSSV not wanting to leave, it is all the others who keep saying the same old story that we need him to lead us. this gives me the impression that the rest do not have confidence in their own ability.
the reality probably is that they want him to go but are afraid to say so for fear of being blacklisted and so keep singing the same old song.
someday another party will take MIC's place in BN and all those who supported DSSV will blame him for their predicament as they would have lost their positions in the Government (assuming BN wins), and by then it would have been too late.
we don't have a mukriz or Muyuddin in MIC. those 2 chaps forced Pak Lah to hand over to Najib.
maybe you will start the call Dato. your name too has the initial M in it.
Regards
M. Selva
Dear Sir,
We are penduduk-penduduk from Taman Gembira, 58200 K.L.
PENGADUAN TERHADAP SEBUAH RUMAH KEDIAMAN AKAN DIJADIKAN TEMPAT SEMBAHYANG ORANG RAMAI.
This TEMPLE is built in the heart of a residential Garden. The owner of the subject residential unit No.1319, Jalan Jiran 5, Taman Gembira, 58200 K.L. has almost completed his renovation of the house to cater for prayer, club and social activities spearheaded by religious temple activities.
We understand that their first ceremonial gathering is scheduled for Tuesday 20 October 2009.
We wish to reiterate that conducting temple, club and social activities by the subject owner at his residential unit would cause unbearable air and noise pollution, not to mention the chaotic parking scenario such activities world create.
We already informed Masjilis Perbandaran Kuala Lumpur, but until now , there was no action was taken.
We trust that TUAN, you will use your good office to preserve the peace and tranquility befitting the intended purpose for which a residential Garden is built.
We thank you.
Yang Berharap,
Aggrieved Residents

Dear Dato
Good effort as FT Dep Minister.
I just wanted to know how much fair for MIC to impose max term limit for president from 2009.
The current president is staying there for 30 years. Does that means there will be 9 years more of current president by constitution?
how much fair ? As a new MIC-VP, hope to see for your comment.
